Case Study ORIOR

ORIOR is an internationally active Swiss food & beverage group consisting of companies that are deeply rooted in their respective regions. These companies have achieved leading positions in growing niche markets with their established brands and products.

The decentralised business model gives the individual ORIOR companies the opportunity to cultivate an individual culture and identity tailored to their employees and customers. ORIOR Group unites 9 highly specialised competence centres at 12 locations and employs a dedicated team of around 2000 people who work together to drive the company’s success and innovative strength.

They create unique product, brand and concept worlds. What they have in common is a passion for culinary art and craftsmanship, an innovation-driven focus on trends and needs, and strong, shared values.

The situation before baseVISION: Opportunities for Improvement in Governance and Disaster Recovery

At the start of the project, ORIOR’s IT environment was in a phase where basic governance structures were lacking. There was no standard naming convention for Azure resources, which made management and traceability difficult. There was also a lack of a consistent tagging strategy that would have allowed resources and their costs to be clearly allocated. The disaster recovery strategy was also inadequate. These challenges led to unclear responsibilities, unnecessary costs and increased risk in the event of a system failure.

The Vision

  • The vision of this project was to create a scalable, secure and future-orientated cloud environment for ORIOR that would support digital transformation while ensuring compliance with governance and compliance policies.
  • By implementing customised Azure governance and building a high-performance landing zone, existing services were to be seamlessly integrated into the new environment.
  • The aim was to increase the company’s agility and efficiency, drive innovation and create a solid foundation for future growth.

The Transformation to a Landing Zone

Development of Concept

At the beginning of the project, a customised Azure governance concept was developed for ORIOR. The focus was on the introduction of clear guidelines, a naming convention and a tagging strategy to improve administration and cost control.

Implementation

Based on the concept developed, we set up an Azure landing zone, which served as the basis for migrating the existing services. In addition, security measures such as break-glass accounts were implemented to strengthen the disaster recovery strategy.

Evaluation

Following successful implementation, the results achieved were evaluated. The implementation of the governance structures led to significant improvements in resource control, security and cost efficiency.

Further development

Based on the evaluations, further optimisations were identified and implemented, as well as the continuous improvement of governance to adapt the cloud environment to future requirements.

Summary

The aim of the project was to create a scalable, secure and future-proof cloud environment that would support digital change and ensure compliance with governance and compliance policies. At the outset, there was a lack of basic governance structures, a standardised naming convention and a consistent tagging strategy. These challenges led to unclear responsibilities, unnecessary costs and an increased risk of system failure.
